Can Chiropractic Help With Headaches?

Woman with head painHeadaches, a prevalent pain condition experienced globally, can vary from mild discomfort to severe debilitation. This widespread form of discomfort frequently results in absenteeism from both school and work.

As the ACA’s flagship campaign, Spinal Health Week will take place on 22-28 May 2023. The focus of this year’s campaign is on the causes of headaches and the negative effects headaches have on families, workers and the Australian economy.

The Main Types

There are several types of headaches, each with its own distinct characteristics. Here are some common types:

  • Tension ones are often characterised by a dull, aching pain that feels like a tight band around the head.
  • Migraines, on the other hand, are typically more severe and can cause intense throbbing or pulsing pain, usually on one side of the head. They may also be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light or sound, and visual disturbances.
  • Cervicogenic ones originate from the neck or cervical spine. They are caused by dysfunction or irritation in the structures of the neck, such as the joints, muscles, or nerves. The pain from cervicogenic headaches often begins in the neck and radiates to the head, typically on one side.

A Desire to Assist Others

As many of our patients are seeking a natural way to alleviate their headaches, Dr Bernie Connolly (Chiropractor) wants to be a resource for them, providing various therapies to help combat their pain.

What to Expect

For most patients, Dr. Bernie will first assess the spine, nervous and vestibular systems. This involves postural photos, spinal palpation, ranges of motion and muscle testing. If indicated the vestibular and oculomotor systems are also assessed as well as the TMJ (jaw). People may be referred for spinal X-rays if necessary.
